Strath-Brae
farm was established on a century old farm on the
outskirts of the town of Burnt River, with the east
boundary of the farm being the Burnt River itself.
It was homesteaded by 3 generations - in the latter
1800's by theHowie's , handed down to the Hodgson's
and in 1944 to the Rettie's who raised black angus.
In 1998 the Douglas family took over the
farm. In
may of 1998 the first scottish highland cattle
arrived, 1 bull and two cows. The Strath-Brae herd
now consists of about 35 head of registered
highlands, 1 quard donkey, 1 pair of quard geese
and a ever growing flock of cochin bantam chickens.
With
a selection of strong foundation females, and herd
sires, the Strath-Brae calves are maintaining the
stong characstics of "the ol scottish
breed". In
the year 2000, the Strath-Brae animals entered the
show ring. Over the past years, they have been
bringing home many ribbons and awards. Strath-Brae
farm is always open to visitors, interested in
purchasing stock or just coming to visit and see
the herd. |
