The Peterborough Historical Society Presentation
The Restoration of Hope Mill
DATE: May 20th, 2008 @ 7:30 PM
LOCATION: Peterborough Public Library, Lower Floor Meeting Room
The Peterborough Historical Society is pleased to present Bob Rehder
and Kathryn Campbell. Bob will be speaking on the restoration work, completed by retirees and
many businesses in the community, which brought Hope Mill back to working order. Kathryn will
present on the carding and fulling era of the Mill.
The carding and fulling Mill was built in 1836 by William Lang.
Ledgers indicate that over a hundred local families brought wool to Hope Mill to be carded.
Hope Mill was converted into a sawmill around 1892 and was continuously owned and operated by
the Land-Hope family until it was sold to ORCA in 1966.
Bob Rehder is retired and worked for 47 years at General Electric
Canada as an electrical engineer. He is active with The Otonabee Conservation Foundation and
Director of the Hope Mill Restoration Project. Bob organized the original volunteer restoration
team and has worked very hard with the planning and fundraising for Hope Mill.
Kathryn Campbell is President, Friends of Hope Mill and Associate
Professor of Business Administration Program at Trent University. She is also on the Board of
The Otonabee Conservation Foundation and has been involved with many Boards in the community.
Her maternal grandfather bought the Hope Mill stone miller's house in 1945 and she grew up in
that house. She is working on compiling historical information about Hope Mill and its
significant role in the local history.
Everyone is welcome to attend this very interesting presentation.
Admission is free; however, you are encouraged to contribute to the "Donations Jar" or purchase
a membership in The Peterborough Historical Society.
