Annual Heritage Awards for 2007

Wednesday, April 30 2008 - 7:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.

(At the Empress Gardens in Peterborough.)

     Since 1896 the Peterborough Historical Society has enthusiastically encouraged interest in cultural, social and architectural history. In this spirit of encouragement and as a way of acknowledging achievement, the Society is sponsoring Annual Heritage Awards for Peterborough City and County citizens. The awards, named in honor of former Peterborough citizens, who made significant contributions to the area, are given in five categories. All Peterborough county and city citizens are encourgaed to participate.

Award Categories

     The F.H. Dobbin Award acknowledges exceptional coverage of historical events, articles, photos or videos.
     The Samuel Armour Award recognizes the involvement and exposure of students to local historical opportunities and programs and/or development of curriculum based on local history.      The Charlotte Nicholls Award will be awarded to individuals or groups who make substantial financial donations for the preservation and/or recognition of historic sites, artifacts, etc.
     The J. Hampden Burnham Award is given to individuals, groups or organizations who establish a venue for public awareness of historical events, places or people.      The George Cox Award will be given for historical restoration and/or preservation of Peterborough properties, i.e. artifacts, structures, gardens, parks, etc.
 
 
 

Eligibility

     The Peterborough County boundaries will form the geographic basis of eligibility. Citizens whose projects are within these boundaries may take part. Nominees can be individuals, businesses, institutions, organizations, groups or the media. The awards committee will consider projects completed in the previous calendar year. If you have questions concerning the eligibility of a nominee or projects please call the PHS office, 740-2600.

Awards

     Certificates will be awarded in April. Although the Awards Committee is not obliged to present an award in each category, normally each category will have a winner and, if necessary, awards of merit for other deserving projects could be presented.

Deadline

     All nomination forms must be received no later than 11:59 p.m., March10 2007.

Nominations

     There are no restrictions on nominees. You can, for example, nominate yourself or your own project for an award. Persons not directly associated with the project but who feel a particular project or person is deserving may nominate with or without the approval or knowledge of the nominee. Awards Committee

     The committee is composed of three members appointed by the Peterborough Historical Society. The members, appointed for 3 years, are chosen for their interest in and knowledge of the local scene. Their work is independent from the Society.
