Hutchison House MuseumFall Plant Sale
Saturday September 20 2008
9:00 a.m. - 11:00 a.m.
The Hutchison House Garden Committee volunteers will host a Fall Plant Sale on Saturday, September 20, 2008 from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. This is always a popular event so be sure to come early for the best choices. Donations of plants and related items are welcome. Anyone wishing to donate plants, roots, tubers, etc. for this sale is asked to please bring them to Hutchison House the week of September 15-19 so they can be priced on Friday prior to the sale. For assistance in transporting plants please call the museum office at 743-9710. Memorial Geraniums for SaleA special addition to the plant sale will include geraniums with a significant history. With delicate blush pink blossoms and salmon centers, this may not be the oldest geranium in Canada, but surely it is the most poignant. Until the plant was brought to Canada, the geranium had resided where it could catch the light in a deep windowsill of a stone farmhouse in the Welsh mountains. From this house, as from many other houses, three sons left for service in WWI - perhaps at Ypres or on the Somme, never to return. The plant was a friend's gift in their memory. Now, nearly a hundred years later, that plant's descendants are still thriving. A few short years ago some plants were donated to the Hutchison House Museum period gardens. Of special note, the same pink geranium was given to the McRae House in Guelph, home of Col. John McRae. The names of individuals who purchase the geraniums will be added to the Memorial Geranium log book. Scissors, Shears & Knife SharpeningNeed your household scissors or beautician's shears sharpened? Garden tools, loppers, hand shears, clippers, or hollow ground blades can be sharpened for a reasonable cost. Drop by Hutchison House Museum on the morning of Saturday, September 20, 2008 to have them professionally sharpened. What if you're not able to bring them by on Saturday? That's no problem, anyone wishing to have their items sharpened may drop them off in advance at the museum office located at 270 Brock Street, Peterborough. For information please call the Hutchison House Museum office at 743-9710.
